A Christmas Message

So as we approach the festive period, I thought it appropriate and necessary to inform you
all of our progress so far. Our 1 st xv have reached the final of the County Cup and in the
League we are riding high, playing with skill and passion, when required showing great
resilience to achieve our objective. More importantly, perhaps, there is a great bond
between the players both on and off the pitch. The Wanderers are similar, they
consistently fight hard and have won against some quality opposition, their win against
Berwick in the quarter final of the Cup was a magnificent achievement. Our thanks go to all
of the coaches and organisers involved.
In the mini and youth sections, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the players and coaches
in action. From the organisation of the un6 and un7 and un8 teams watching their
exuberance and obvious development to the thrill of first contact at un9 and the
progressions of the game beyond into the older age groups. We have good sides, some
talented players, but more importantly an enormous number of children enjoying organised
sport and learning the lessons of discipline and teamwork. Our Colts team have had some
close encounters, they train hard and I note the number of games they have in the new year
to progress in their league, well done to Charlie O’Brien on his selection for the County
squad. Talking of County representation our Un16 and Un18 girls have a huge
representation at this level, too numerous to mention individually but I congratulate them
all on this honour. I am not surprised, I have seen them play and train with organisation,
talent and commitment in abundance. THE Un 12 and Un14 teams continue in the same
vein, loads of enthusiasm and endeavour. The 12,14 and 16’s games against quality Sandal
sides were a pleasure to watch and the girls toughed it out for 3 great wins. Our thanks go
to all of the adults involved for their time and efforts, It is appreciated.
On the Squash front membership is at 400 and on our newly refurbished courts: quality,
competitiveness and enjoyment are on constant view. The league teams all appear to be in
strong positions in their respective divisions. At the Newcastle Sports Awards Dinner, in
November, hosted magnificently by our own Roger Thames, Bob Aynsley, with an
inspirational back story and a huge asset to Northern FC, won the prestigious “Coach of the
Year,” He is also the current England Squash Coach of the Year! Duncan Rutherford, number
3 ranked at Un16 in the Country was awarded the John Dale Trophy, for Northumberland’s
outstanding junior player, a recognised rising star. A marvellous evening which I was
privileged to be invited to. More recently, Shae Paterson, is in a shortlist of 3 for an England
Star award as Junior Coach/ Volunteer of the Year. There is clearly a plethora of talent in
our Squash section.
In the clubhouse, David Giles and his team continue to work tirelessly to ensure we maintain
our high standards of hospitality. The vaunted Pie Nights continue to sell out and both our
Christmas Events are full to capacity. The New Year’s Eve tickets are also selling well. The
current Wine List is under investigation for improvements as he and his team strive to make
the best even better. You may not be aware, the clubhouse is in constant use throughout
the day and evening. I, as I am sure you are, continue to be extremely grateful for their
efforts.
Moving forwards and to recognise the work of the various Committees, and crucially so you
are aware: Grant applications have been submitted for improving/developing girls’ changing
rooms in rugby. Grants are also in place through Allianz for grassroots expansion and also
another for Volunteers. We are investigating and have quotes for Solar Panelling and are
also making enquiries regarding EV Charging points both will be subject to feasibility and

viability. Plans are being discussed to improve the entrance/foyer space. Work needs to be
done on the roof and this is in hand. Modernisation or replacements to the existing bike
shed are also in hand. The Floodlight drama has now been resolved and next year can be
illuminated on the 15 th of August! We have had an extremely positive response to the
letting out of our rooms, at present vacant, and would hope for resolution early in the new
year. British Engines have sponsored new flags and predator pads and MGISD Ltd are
sponsoring two new pitch- side boards. There will be more in the coming months and I am
exceptionally keen that relevant information, obviously within reason, should be known by
all, hence the above.
There is a lot going on. On the fields, on the courts, or in the clubhouse and I thank each and
every one of you for your efforts.
My wife and I wish you a very merry Xmas and All the Best for 2025

Jim Pollock - Northern FC President
