1st XV lost 35 – 5 away to Morpeth. Match report thanks to Walter Ritchie:
A disappointing start to 2018 on a day perfect for rugby on a surprisingly excellent surface after heavy frosts and lot of rain.
Northern had a run of 7 games when they had gained points in one way and another and hoped to continue the theme. However, certain key players were not available for one reason or another and despite some early pressure from the visitors, top of the table Morpeth were soon in their stride and capitalised with 2 penalties and 2 converted tries with their scoring opportunities. Just before half time Louie Tang ran back a Morpeth kick out of his own half and offloaded the ball to the supporting Alex Clark who although tackled by the Morpeth cover defence was able to pass inside to the supporting Ali Gray who sped over for a fine try which sadly was not converted to leave Morpeth leading 20 - 5 at the break.
Changes were made at half time to the Northern pack to give more stability in the tight but they were unable to stop a driving maul and a further Morpeth try was scored. Northern rallied and began to show more fight and with a little more composure should have reduced the deficit. Morpeth however looking more organised and with their pack dominating in the loose scored 2 more tries to run out comfortable winners 35 – 5.
Penrith are our visitors next Saturday on their first visit at 1st team level so let’s give them a Northern welcome and send them back to Cumbria impressed by both our performance and our excellent facilities.
